Carburetor Cleaning in 4 steps

The carburetor should be cleaned on regular intervals to keep it clean and working properly.

After being in use for a while your old carburetor tends to get clogged up by rust, small particles and other junk that comes trough. The carburetor should be cleaned on regular intervals to keep it clean and working properly.

In reality, it’s important to change your fuel filter regularly to, it often gets clogged with debris from the fuel tank, especially on these older tanks which haven’t been cleaned for decades.

If the carburetor is in good condition, these step should help getting it clean. Keep in mind though, that if the carb has sat for a very long time, it might have been subject to “white death” oxidation, and that can mean that it needs rebuilding.

Carburetor Cleaning Procedure

Step 1:
Make sure the engine is of, then remove the air filter, linkages to carburetor and fuel lines. Screw the carburetor loose from the intake.

Step 2:
Use a strong carb cleaner solvent. You can get those at most auto supply stores. Please understand that this solvent is very bad for your eyes and skin, so wear gloves and protective glasses when you do this job. Soak the carburetor with the solvent, making sure it gets in everywhere.

Now, let it sit for a while, it needs at least 12 hours to do its job properly.

Step 3:
Now use a rag or towel or some cloth to wipe the solvent of, still wearing gloves and protective glasses. When this is done, use your compressor to blow air in the tight spots of the carburetor to get the last remnants of the solvent out.

Step 4:
Bolt the carburetor back on the car and reattach the fuel hose, vacuum hoses and throttle linkage to the carb.

Again, please take security measures when dealing with the kind of solvents talked about in this article. PROTECT YOUR EYES AND SKIN.

Your carburetor cleaning is now done, and you are ready to drive again.
